The goal of this project was to create an image using line value to shade areas rather than recreate textures themselves. After being given the image (a squirrel,) I drew its contours and then split into a grid of inch-sized squares and labeled each from 1 - 6 based on the overall darkness I felt it represented. Then I scoured my brain to try and put interesting textures into the image. The week prior, we had done a creative practice making shade values with squares, which was a good jumping off point for my pattern choices in this assignment. As I shaded I found myself coming back to a few types of patterns: basic line/crosshatching techniques, detailed flourishes, geometric shapes, and halftones. Since I started my design program I've discovered that halftones are my best friend and I love using them in my art.
I sketched and drafted most of this on my iPad in procreate, which I discovered was not great when it came to revisiting my preliminary work, but was great when it came to drafting new things and having a little bit of guidance in the art process itself. I'm not a particularly good illustrator, so having stability settings with my drawing tools made the process a lot easier.
