This assignment called for a motivational quote, but the timing happened to line up with an archival display I was putting together at my job about labor union history in Utah, so I made it a two for one. The type figure itself illustrated Joe Hill and is made from lyrics to his song "The Preacher and the Slave".
This assignment allowed only five colors from an assigned pallet, and most of the design work was done in grayscale before any color at all was added. Before deciding on the type figure, I also considered a different quote with very stylized, bold lettering.
An early sketch of my idea. Most of my drafts used all caps sans serif, and for a time Akzidenz-Grotesk was the only typeface I used for the entire poster. Eventually I decided to include another to balance things.
Another quote I considered. The "Pie in the Sky" thing was kind of out there, so I worried it might just confused people. Then I realized it might draw people in to look closer. I'm glad I stuck with it.
The other design idea I had. I really enjoyed the shading of those letters.
